About Us
CHARACTER COUNTS! is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian coalition. We are the nation's most widely used character-development framework, adopted by schools as well as youth, sports and civic organizations. The Knoxville/ Knox County chapter is part of a national grassroots initiative that has no ideological or political agenda other than strengthening the moral fiber of the next generation by promoting consensus ethical values. We promote and support the development of the personal and organizational integration of the Six Pillars of Character throughout the community.
The Six Pillars of Character are ethical values to guide our choices. The standards of conduct that arise out of those values constitute the ground rules of ethics, and therefore of ethical decision-making.
The Six Pillars are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship

Mission
We want to create a community where the Six Pillars of Character are understood and seen in every segment of the City so that youth and adults in Knoxville will be continually reminded of the importance of good behavior. Our vision is to elevate the quality of character throughout the city to enable Knoxville to become one of the best places in the country in which to live, to raise children, to go to school, and to conduct business.

CHARACTER COUNTS!
Knoxville/ Knox County is proud to once again bring the students of Knox County our Foundations for Life essay contest.
Foundations for Life is a maxim-based discussion and essay program that helps prepare students for crucial tests, improves their reasoning and writing skills, and inspires them to reflect upon and express profound and enduring truths that will guide them in making ethical choices in their lives.
This is how it works:
- Reflect – Students reflect on the meaning of selected quotations and apply their thoughts to better understand the world around them and their own lives.
- Express – Students express in their own words the underlying wisdom of the quotations.
- Commit – Students are encouraged to live more meaningful and effective lives by incorporating their new insights into their daily life.
